Mathematics Major

Required Units


Total number of units required for major, excluding any required Intensive(s): 9 above the 100-level after completion of MATH 121 /MATH 126 /MATH 127  or their equivalent (advanced placement)

Students choose one of three alternative pathways:

Electives


Three electives depending on the chosen pathway:

  • Mathematics: One at the 200 or 300 level and two at the 300 level
  • Statistics: Three at the 300-level, two of which must be Statistics; students who use MATH 242 Applied Statistical Modeling  to fulfill both the Specific Course Requirement and the Distributional Content Area must take an additional 200- or 300-level elective
  • Applied Mathematics: MATH 215  or MATH 217 , and two at the 300 level, one of which must be an applied mathematics course; students who use MATH 215  or 217  to fulfill the Specific Course requirement must take an additional 200- or 300-level elective.

Intensives


Intensive taken in the senior year.

NRO


Work used to satisfy major requirements may not be taken NRO after declaration of the major. Only one course taken NRO may count toward the major. No work at the 300 level for the major may be taken NRO.

Additional Information


Independent study (MATH 298  or MATH 399 ), community-engaged learning (MATH 290 ), and other ungraded work may not be counted among the required units except with prior approval of the chair.    

Recommendation


The department recommends that majors take MATH 217  or a programming course in computer science. Students following pathways in applied mathematics or statistics are recommended to take courses in related fields where mathematics and/or statistics are applied.
