URBS 204 - Rural Sociology

(Same as SOCI 204) What is the state of the rural — in contemporary society, and in urban imagination? How does modernization make rural livelihoods and settlements vulnerable? And why does it appear that many people are “going country”? This course examines the demographic, economic, cultural, and political conditions of rural society, with a focus on North America and an attention to global sources of change. Themes include rural inequalities and diversities; the transformation of agriculture, resource extraction, and industry in the countryside; hinterland out-migration, in-migration, and urbanization; and visibilities and invisibilities of “the rural” in popular culture, social problems, and politics.
