HISP 229 - Postcolonial Latin America Semester Offered: Spring 1 unit(s) (Same as LALS 229 ) Topic for 2026/27b: Mexican Cinema. This course introduces the student to modern Mexican film. The trajectory of the course covers a very concise canon of essential works from around the years of Mexico’s so-called Golden Age (one each from the decades 1930-1970s), followed by a significant focus on contemporary work (films produced since 2000). Lecture and discussion is driven by the aesthetic, cultural, and political problems and themes invited by the films themselves, which are the center of the course. The central objective of the semester is to introduce ourselves to and engage with the cultural, political, and social history of modern Mexico that these films invite us to consider and to problematize. George Azcarate.
