HISP 206 - Reading and Writing about Hispanic Culture Semester Offered: Fall and Spring 1 unit(s) Topic for 2026/27a and b: Undoing Patriarchy in Latin America. In this course, we examine how feminist, anti-racist, anti-capitalist, and anti-colonial authors, collectives, and artists undo and overflow patriarchal social norms and roles to create new territories of dissent and communality. While practicing reading, writing, listening, and speaking in Spanish, we discuss and analyze various works to map anti-patriarchal currents in Latin America. Emphasis is placed on contemporary thought and creations by Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and gender-nonconforming people. Materials include essays, poetry, journalistic chronicles, music videos, interviews, video art, short stories, comic strips, and podcast episodes. By the end of the course, students have identified major antipatriarchal interventions in Latin America, discussed their main concepts, analyzed creative works, and presented a group project on an antipatriarchal topic. Montserrat Madariaga-Caro.
