FILM 281 - Exhibitions and Festivals

Semester Offered: Spring
0.5 unit(s)
In the age of streaming and multi-platform content, how are films publicly exhibited? What role do festivals play when distribution is decentered and can be instantaneous? In this year-long intensive, students travel to a variety of exhibition sites and experience several modes, which may include a drive-in or a live-event broadcast. The course concentrates on New York state film festivals, ranging from niche or local festivals like Save & Project or Coney Island Film Festival as well as a major industry-centric event like the New York Film Festival. The course concludes with an overnight trip to the Nitrate Picture Show in Rochester, where the subject of the festival is the very material of celluloid itself. Students explore how the venues where we encounter films define our experience and expectations of them, asking how (and where) cinema attempts to articulate itself as an art form, historical object, class and/or cultural marker. Requirements include journal responses to each site visited, readings, and in-class meetings once per month for group discussion.  Erica Stein.

Yearlong course FILM 280 -281.
