FFS 381 - The Invention of the Québécois Novel

Semester Offered: Spring
1 unit(s)
This course introduces students to major authors of Québécois novels of the twentieth century, with an emphasis on their evolution within the historical context. We consider the relationships of Québécois novelists within and beyond the borders of “la belle province.” What is the nature of the relationship between French and English speakers, in Quebec? Between Québécois and Americans?  Between the Québécois and the First Nations? Between Québécois authors and others who write in French? Our exploration of an ever evolving, rich corpus of Québécois literature is organized around four historico-cultural and thematic trends: movements from the country to the city, the call of the United States, a return to the intimate, and the migrant experience. Ultimately, what makes a Canadian novel, written in French, specifically Québécois? Possible authors include Ringuet, Gabrielle Roy, Hubert Aquin, Jacques Poulin, Monique LaRue, Nancy Huston, Louise Dupré, Ying Chen, and Abla Farhoud. Adam Cutchin.

One 2-hour period.
