ART 382 - Belle Ribicoff Seminar

Semester Offered: Spring
0.5 unit(s)
Topic for 2020/21b: Contemporary Art and Curatorial Practice. This six-week seminar explores some of the key issues in the study of contemporary art and exhibitions by focusing on queer, Latinx, and feminist art practices. How have curators and institutions responded to demands—both historical and contemporary—for increased representation and diversity in museum collections and exhibitions? Instead of the site visits to art museums, galleries, and alternative art spaces as initially envisioned, we will meet with curators and museum professionals remotely to discuss new directions, challenges, and opportunities in the field. Our conversations will engage individuals working across the region, including New York City, upstate New York, and the Berkshires in neighboring Western Massachusetts. Examples of institutions we may engage include, the Whitney Museum of American Art, El Museo del Barrio, and Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art (formerly, the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art) in New York, the Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore College, and MASS MoCA in North Adams. Remote conversations with individuals working farther afield, such as, LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Archives of American Art, may also be possible. C. Ondine Chavoya.

Prerequisite(s): Permission of the Chair of the Art Department.

Second six-week course.

One 2-hour period.

Course Format: INT
