ART 358 - Seminar in Asian Art

Semester Offered: Spring
1 unit(s)
(Same as ASIA 358 ) Topic for 2020/21b: Art of Immigrants in Ancient China. This course looks at ancient Chinese art from the perspective of immigrants, who arrived through the so-called “Silk Road,” a network of land and sea routes connecting China and the rest of the Eurasian continent (India, Persia, Central Asia, etc.). It focuses on how immigrants (e.g., Sogdians, Turks, Mongols) adopted and adapted Chinese art on the one hand, and contributed to and transformed indigenous traditions on the other. The seminar covers a series of topics ranging from painting, sculpture, to textiles and ceramics. Students will be given the opportunity to investigate ancient objects in person either in museum storage or in the classroom. Jin Xu.

Prerequisite(s): Permission of the instructor.
