ART 331 - Seminar in Northern European Art

Semester Offered: Spring
1 unit(s)
Topic for 2020/21b: Gender, Sexuality, and Art in Early Modern Northern Europe. This seminar investigates gender and sexuality with respect to early modern art in Northern Europe. Treating artworks as means for materializing as well as interrogating desire, emotion, and discernment, we examine a diverse range of artistic monuments posing emotional and intellectual challenges. Some of the notions we familiarize ourselves with are gaze, body, nude, and matrimony, and some of the cultural discourses we discuss are misogyny, courtly love, desire, and patronage. Acknowledging that discussions of early modern gender and sexuality are necessarily discursive, we also attend to more recent theories that lend investigative lenses. The objective of this seminar is to develop the ability to identify, problematize, and contextualize early modern visual and material articulations of gender and sexuality. Haohao Lu.
