Dance Major

The Dance Major at Vassar is a comprehensive program that blends the physical and artistic rigor of dance with the intellectual and analytical depth of a liberal arts education. Students engage in the intensive practice of various dance forms, honing their technical proficiency, embodied knowledge, and artistic expression. Technique courses and creative practice are fully integrated with a curriculum of theoretical and analytical courses. Students investigate dance through a cultural, historical, and societal lens. This dual focus ensures that graduates are not only skilled artists but also thoughtful scholars, well-prepared for a wide range of careers in the arts.

All Dance Majors incorporate writing, theory, and history into research that critically analyzes important dance topics. Students create new work, investigate current societal topics, study dance’s foundations, and learn iconic repertoires. The curriculum supports in-depth, critical inquiry and encourages cross-departmental collaboration. A Senior Capstone project is required of all Dance Majors.
