Requirements for the Correlate Sequence in Data Science and Society
| Introductory Intermediate One of: Capstone Complete one of the following to satisfy the capstone requirement: - A 1-unit 300-level course that is preapproved by the DSS Steering Committee, or
- A 1-unit 300-level course where the student proposes a substantial project that is vetted by the DSS Steering Committee as having a substantial amount of engagement with all aspects of the DSS correlate (computing, society, and statistics). Students must submit a proposal through the Capstone Approval Request Form.
Additional Information - Students interested in declaring a Data Science and Society correlate should as a first step complete the Intention to Declare form, also available here.
- To see a list of pre-approved capstone courses, visit https://pages.vassar.edu/dss/correlate/.
- Work used to satisfy the correlate requirements may not be taken NRO after declaration of the correlate. At most, one non-capstone course taken NRO may count towards the correlate.
- A student majoring or with a correlate in CMPU (or MATH) must take their capstone outside of the Computer Science (or Mathematics and Statistics) Department.
- Intro Course Placement/Waivers
- CMPU 100 Alternatives:
- If a student places out of CMPU 100 to take CMPU 101 or CMPU 102 , they can go into CMPU 250 with self-study of appropriate material. CMPU 100 instructors can provide material.
- If a student places out of CMPU 101 (with AP CS), they still need to take a CS course to satisfy the correlate, namely, CMPU 102.
- MATH 240 Alternatives
- Intermediate DSS course
- Students must take either of the following to complete the Intermediate DSS course requirement: CMPU 250 or MATH 244. A student cannot take both of these.
