Eight additional units of FFS courses.

Following initial placement, students should work through each level of the curriculum in order to enroll in a higher level as follows:

• 100 level:

• FFS 105 - Elementary French and
• FFS 106 - Elementary French

• or

• FFS 109 - Basic French Review

• 200A level:

• FFS 205 - Intermediate French I and
• FFS 206 - Intermediate French II

•  

• 200B level:

• FFS 210 - The Francophone World Through Text, Sound, and Image and
• FFS 212 - Reading Literature and Film

•  

• 200C level:

  Any 200-level course above FFS 212 ; one unit of 200C-level recommended before enrolling in FFS 240 . 

•  

  300 level:

  Work at 200C-level required.

Intensives

One unit of Intensive required, preferably taken as two 0.5 units.

Senior Year Requirements

To graduate, majors need two 300-level seminars, and one unit of intensive work at any level. A minimum of 1.5 units must be taken at the 300 level as a senior. This requirement is distinct from, but may overlap with the 300-level requirement for concentration stated above.

Study Abroad

Up to 6 units from Study Away and summer courses may be counted toward a major in French and Francophone Studies, with departmental approval.

Other

• Students may not take or count toward the major courses lower in level than their initial course in the department.
• A French AP score of 4 or 5 may count as one unit towards the major.
• Courses taken under the NRO will not count towards the satisfaction of the major (or correlate) requirements. An exception for one (1) unit, taken while enrolled in a Study Abroad (or Summer) program, may be granted by the department upon request.
• A maximum of one course taught in English may be counted toward the major.

Teaching Certification

Students who wish to obtain Secondary Certification must complete the program of study outlined by the Education Department.
