Additional Information

Entrance into the studio concentration is determined by evaluation of the student’s class work and by a review of the student’s portfolio by the studio faculty. The portfolio may be submitted for evaluation at any time, ordinarily during the sophomore year.

Students interested in majoring in Studio Art are advised to take ART 107  and at least one additional studio course early in their studies in order to develop a portfolio of work for evaluation when applying to the Studio Art major. Students interested in the studio major should consult the studio faculty by the end of their sophomore year.

All upper-level Studio Art courses are Special Permission (SP). Students should reach out to instructors very early in the pre-registration process to express interest in registering. Studio Art instructors keep their own waitlists and do not use the Registrar’s waitlist system.

Studio Majors are required to take ART 301 - Senior Project  during the spring semester of their senior year. In preparation for their Senior Project, majors should take ART 306 - Studio Critiques  in the fall semester of their senior year. In addition, majors are encouraged to take Art 306 during their junior year. (ART 306 may be repeated for credit.)

Please note:

  • Sculpture I is a full-year, two-unit course that begins in the fall term. At Vassar, both semesters of full-year courses must be completed in order to receive credit.
  • Some upper-level courses accept Drawing I as a prerequisite–see course descriptions.
  • Students planning to study abroad should discuss their program and coursework with their advisor in advance. In order to receive credit towards the studio major for studio art courses taken during Study Abroad, students must submit a portfolio of work upon return for review by the studio art faculty.
  • AP credit, NRO and Independent Study work may not be used to satisfy the requirements for the studio art concentration. Transfer credits are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  • In certain cases, and with department permission, an additional 300-level studio course may be counted as one of the required 200-level studio courses.
  • Studio courses charge a course fee. Students receiving Vassar financial aid are eligible for the Art/Film Stipend for one studio course per semester, which covers the cost of most materials. Please see the Vassar Financial Aid office for more information. The form is available online through Financial Aid once classes begin.
