HIST 182 - The 2016 Election in Historical Perspective

Semester Offered: Fall
0.5 unit(s)
Starting with the rise of mass political parties in the early 19th century, this course examines long-term themes and issues in US electoral politics. How have xenophobia, racism, and sexism shaped the structures of the political system as well as election issues and outcomes? How have the historical bases of the Democratic and Republican parties changed over time? How have insurgent movements—especially those responding to moments of economic crisis—shaped public policy? Course materials include party platforms, editorials, speeches, electoral maps, and works of historical scholarship. Rebecca Edwards.

Note:  students who are taking HIST 276 Democracy in America? U.S. Politics and Power, 1828-1896 , in fall 2016 cannot also take History 182 for credit.

First six-week course.

One 2-hour period.
