MUSI 384 - The Art of Orchestration

This course investigates the art of writing for various instruments and instrumental ensembles. We start by examining the various properties of instruments by families, working through the strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, etc. Students use a text, workbook, and online listening examples to develop some of the skills necessary to write for instruments individually and in combination. We also study examples across the spectrum of music from the 19th century to today, drawn from classical and popular styles.
