ASIA 303 - Gifted: Art from India at Vassar 1 unit(s) (Same as HIST 303 ) Exciting examples of Indian art are held in the storage rooms below Vassar’s Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center: eighteenth century miniatures of the god Krishna dallying with his lady love, Indo-Chinese paintings of princes and courtesans on glass, the Buddha and demi-gods carved in stone. Why did alumnae including Ruth Lamb Atkinson ‘18 and Aroline Beecher ‘21 choose these objects for Vassar, and how did they obtain them? When and how have these objects been (or not been) displayed? What were the original meanings and purposes of these arts in South Asia? We use the Archives & Special Collections Library, other primary sources, scholarship, and the art itself to research and contextualize the history of the collection and its individual objects in preparation for an exhibition of South Asian art at the Loeb, planned for Spring 2017. Julie Hughes.
Not offered in 2016/17.
One 2-hour period.
