ART 254 - The Arts of Eastern, Southern, Central and Western Africa Semester Offered: Spring 1 unit(s) (Same as AFRS 254 ) This course is organized thematically and examines the ways in which sculpture, painting, photography, textiles, and film and video function both historically and currently in relationship to broader cultural issues. Within this context, this course explores performance and masquerade in relationship to gender, social, and political power. We also consider the connections between the visual arts and cosmology, identity, ideas of diaspora, colonialism and post-colonialism, as well as the representation of the “Self,” and the “Other.”
Prerequisite(s): ART 105 or ART 106 , one course in Africana Studies, or permission of the instructor.
The Non-Recorded Option is available to non-majors.
