HIST 317 - Youth Culture and Politics in Africa, 1930s to Present

Semester Offered: Spring
1 unit(s)
(Same as AFRS 317 ) Starting in the 1930s, youth in many colonized African countries produced new organizations and cultural expressions to affirm their identity, challenge colonial domination, and participate in a transnational exchange of ideas, culture and politics. The seminar explores how these cultural expressions, organizations and exchanges reflected the shifting aspirations of different generations of African youth. It is attentive to the impact of their agency and actions as well as their transnational and Afro-diasporic connections. While looking at these organizatiois as part of a broader historical process, the seminar focuses more closely on groups and movements such as the West African Youth league in the 1930s, the Black Consciousness Movement in the 1960s and 1970s, the Pan-African Youth Union in the 1980s, and End SARs, Y’en A Marre, Black Lives Matter, and Gen Z activists in the early 21st century. Ismail Rashid.

One 2-hour period.
