As a genre, The Western is closely linked to ideas of American exceptionalism and, globally, expansionist national identities. For almost as long as it has existed, however, filmmakers and scholars have taken a decolonial approach to The Western, asking how it can be turned to different political purposes. This Intensive, which accompanies FILM 218 The Western: Global and Intergalactic Frontiers  as a corequisite, focuses on such approaches. Mia Mask.
