MEDS 226 - The Art of Translation

1 unit(s)
Translation is ubiquitous yet often invisible in our daily life. As citizens of the world, patrons of the arts, and professionals in all fields, we all depend on the too-often invisible work of translators. This course studies this crucial human and increasingly AI-driven practice first by analyzing and describing multilingualism as the necessary premise for translation; and second, by considering pivotal moments in the history of translation and the intellectual debate surrounding it. While providing theoretical insights from semiotics, linguistics, pragmatics, translation and interpretation studies, this class also offers moments of interaction with professional translators and hands-on, peer-to-peer practice sessions. The course is open to students comfortable working in one additional language besides English.

Prerequisite(s): Interested students should contact the instructor during registration.

Two 75-minute periods.

Not offered in 2026/27.

Course Format: CLS
