FILM 271 - Creative Film Theory Semester Offered: Fall 0.5 unit(s) Film theory is itself creative, sometimes wildly so: various theorists have argued that representational art is a mummifying practice, that 17th-century tourist attractions work like VR headsets, and that film imagines what nonhuman subjectivity might look like. In this intensive, we read theorists like Siegfried Kracauer, Anne Friedberg, Arika Mizuta Lippit, and Eugenie Brinkema and respond to them creatively by building board games, taking photographs, assembling zines, and editing video essays. Course meetings alternate between intensive discussion of an assigned theorist and presentation of a creative project inspired by that theorist. Erica Stein.
Prerequisite(s): FILM 209 .
Two hours every other week.
