FILM 286 - 2001: A Year in Review

Semester Offered: Fall
1 unit(s)
This course analyzes global cinema focusing on a single year: 2001. Standing as a retroactive passage between two historical periods - the unipolar world symbolically established with the fall of the Berlin wall, and the war on terror triggered by 9/11 - 2001 is an especially interesting year for cinema, with landmark works being released around the world that pushed to the limit some of the formal motifs developed in the previous decade. Taking as an example the way 1968 has become a symbolic year for the experimentation of the 1960s, this course looks at films released in 2001 in search for clues of the historical shifts taking place at the threshold between the “end of history” (Fukuyama) and the instability of the post-9/11 world. Fabio Andrade.

Prerequisite(s): FILM 209

Two 75-minute periods accompanied by film screenings.
