HIST 246 - African American History since 1865 Semester Offered: Spring 1 unit(s) (Same as AFRS 246 ) This course provides an overview of major developments in African American history from Emancipation to the present. We trace key events and themes, including Reconstruction, segregation and Jim Crow, Black modernity and activism, World War I, the Great Migrations, Black Power, race and electoral politics in postwar America. Black feminisms, Black trans, queer, and feminist activism, and the Black Lives Matter Movement. Drawing on a range of texts, including narratives, biographies, social histories, images, artwork, music and archival sources, this course highlights the historical and ongoing movements for Black freedom in the U.S. and modern world. In this survey of modern Black history, students will engage with primary gender, sexuality, and region.
