LALS 387 - Latin American Seminar

(Same as HISP 387 ) A seminar offering in-depth study of topics related to the literary and cultural history of Latin America. This course may be repeated for credit when the topic changes.

Topic for 2026/27a: Regimes of Healing in Latin America. This seminar examines the unique origins and evolution of the literature and film of healing in Latin America. The course focuses on the culturally heterogeneous and politically charged practices of caring, curing, and healing. Throughout the Americas, health has been represented as a struggle between regimes of knowledge. The central objective of the semester is to introduce ourselves to and engage with the cultural, political, and social history of modern Mexico that these films invite us to consider and to problematize. George Azcarate.

Topic for 2026/27a: Detective Fiction in Latin America.This seminar examines the unique literary origins and development of detective fiction in Latin America in different national, political, and cultural contexts to inquire how specific genres of detective fiction and film correspond to particular issues of organized crime, class and ethnic difference, governability, corruption, quotidian violence, urbanization, and the media across Latin America. Prerequisite(s): HISP 216  and one course above 216.
