SOCI 265 - News Media in the United States Semester Offered: Fall 1 unit(s) This course joins the ongoing debate about the meaning of press freedom and explores the relationship between news and democracy. It examines how the news media operate in American society and assesses how well the current media are serving the information needs of citizens. Topics may include: the meaning of “objectivity,” the relationship between journalists and sources, news and public opinion, ownership of news media, the relationship between news and advertising, propaganda and news management, and the role of alternative media. William Hoynes.
