PHIL 238 - Social and Political Philosophy

This course is a survey of contemporary Anglo-American political philosophy. The focus is on important contributions to the understanding of the theoretical foundations of political society in the last several decades. Necessarily, this includes discussions of the nature of the individual, interpersonal relations, the family and reproduction, gender, race, political economy, civil society, and government. Central normative concepts that are investigated include justice, freedom, equality, oppression, domination, legitimate authority, civic virtue, care, misogyny, and white supremacy. Effort is made to apply the theoretical content to urgent political problems such as health care, executive power, wealth inequality, systemic racism, and gender equality.
