ITAL 220 - Italian Identities

Following the structure of the pronouns (io, tu, lei, noi, voi, loro), this course explores questions of Italian identity across a variety of media from the Middle Ages through today. Through the study and analysis of texts by notable Italian authors like Niccolò Machiavelli, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and Natalia Ginzburg, in addition to a selection of varied material including historical recipes, Baroque painting, and Elena Ferrante’s TV series The Lying Life of Adults, students hone their linguistic and cultural competencies and transition from communicative to abstract language as they engage in thoughtful discussion of the material. Students read and produce short essays and oral presentations. Simona Bondavalli.

Prerequisite(s): ITAL 206  or permission of the instructor.

Course conducted entirely in Italian.

Two 75-minute periods.
