ESCI 351 - Volcanology

Volcanoes provide a window into the interior workings of our planet. They are also spectacular landscape features, serene in repose and often violent in eruption. This course addresses the physical aspects of volcanism, including topics such as the generation of magmas, the styles and products of eruptions, tectonic controls on the distribution of volcanoes, and methods for predicting and mitigating the hazards associated with volcanic activity. A required field trip to an active volcano is possible. John Zayac.

Prerequisite(s): ESCI 201 , or permission of the instructor.

One 4-hour period.
