FILM 226 - The Unfinished Film

Semester Offered: Spring
0.5 unit(s)
Do you have creative projects that you’ve abandoned or that are in partial states of being? Do you have a script that longs to see the light of day but that languishes in a drawer instead? Is your notebook full of ideas for short or feature films that you wish could be made? This intensive critically interrogates incompletion or the unfinished in film production and screenwriting. Instead of describing incompletion in terms of loss, fragmentation, and failure, how might one reconceptualize incompletion as generative? How can incompletion as a theoretical framework challenge the fetishization of the completed film in film history and practice? We draw inspiration from media scholars, filmmakers, and podcasters who navigate the fragile and uncertain creative terrain of incompletion and the unfinished. Sophia Harvey.
