FFS 383 - Francophone Caribbean Writers: A Reading Group

Semester Offered: Fall
0.5 unit(s)
In this intensive, we read and reflect on four novels that represent shared legacies yet carve particular points of view on colonial and postcolonial Caribbean identity: La Vie Scélérate by Maryse Condé (Guadeloupe), Texaco by Patrick Chamoiseau (Martinique), Bain de Lune by Yanick Lahens, and L’Enigme du Retour by Dany Laferrière (Haiti). We focus on issues of aesthetics, hybridité and créolité, domination and self-determination, exile, diaspora, and return. Students take turns leading the discussions. Theoretical sources from Frantz Fanon, Edouard Glissant, Jean Bernabé, Patrick Chamoiseau, and Raphaël Confiant inform our discussions. Patricia-Pia Celerier.

Prerequisite(s): Permission of the instructor.

Two hours every other week.

Course Format: INT
