SOCI 284 - Sociological Approaches to Poverty and Community Well-Being Semester Offered: Fall 1 unit(s) In the United States we learn that all persons have an equal opportunity to succeed and need only apply themselves within their varied social contexts and communities. This perspective assumes that our society is based solely on merit, where socio-economic background, communities, race, and gender do not influence one’s ultimate social outcomes. Do the different pathways available to individuals actually provide comparable opportunities for the display of merit? This course examines the validity of basic underlying cultural assumptions that operate within our society and seeks to understand individual and patterned outcomes sociologically. Ruth Thompson-Miller.
Three 75-minute periods.
