PHIL 287 - Introduction to Indian Philosophy Semester Offered: Fall 1 unit(s) In this course, we explore the key debates that have shaped the Indian philosophical landscape for centuries. The course offers an opportunity to closely investigate the intellectual exchange between two major philosophical traditions: Buddhism and Nyāya. Through engagement with primary texts, we examine the contrasting perspectives on fundamental philosophical issues, with a particular focus on epistemology (sources of knowledge, including perception, inference, and testimony) and metaphysics (the nature of reality). We explore how Indian philosophy may provide valuable resources for addressing questions that still concern us today in these areas. By engaging with these debates, students gain insight into these rich philosophical traditions, broaden their philosophical perspectives, and enhance their critical thinking skills. Lee Ling Ting.
Prerequisite(s): One course in Philosophy or permission of the instructor.
Two 75-minute periods.
