ECON 271 - Chinese Economy

1 unit(s)
(Same as ASIA 271 ) As the world’s second-largest economy, China has undergone immense structural change and growth in the last 40 years. China’s transformation into what it is today is unprecedented and unique. Understanding what drove China’s economic rise on the international stage is essential for at least three reasons. First, the world economy is increasingly reliant on China’s role in global trade. Second, China’s experience may provide insights into economic development for developing economies. Third, with increasing geopolitical and economic competition with the West, understanding the nature and development of the Chinese economy provides insights into potential solutions to this conflict. This course examines the drivers of China’s explosive economic growth, as well as the challenges it faces in the future. The course is structured as a survey on the following topics: China’s economic institutions and policy-making infrastructure, Chinese industrial policy, the development and role of China’s financial system, and the role of China in global trade. Additional topics are added based on current events and/or student interest. Harrison Shieh.

Prerequisite(s): ECON 102  or permission of the instructor.
