SOCI 281 - The Family

Semester Offered: Spring
1 unit(s)
This course explores the dynamic realities and contested meanings of household, family, and kinship. We examine early western sociology’s interest in the rise of the “modern” family, as well as the subsequent societal anxiety and fascination with its purpose and borders. To study “the family” as a social institution, we seek to understand family structures and relationships within their historical, cultural, and political contexts. Case studies illuminate the interaction between global and local forces and the constellation of institutions surrounding families, including communities, schools, workplaces, and the state. Historical and contemporary topics include relations of care, connection, and conflict as families navigate state power, gender and sexuality, generational friction, chosen families, racialization and racism, migrations, class mobility, and economic strain. Light Carruyo.

Two 75-minute periods.

Course Format: CLS
