RUSS 371 - Seminar on Russian Culture Semester Offered: Fall and Spring 1 unit(s) Advanced seminar on Russian culture. Designed for majors and students with sufficient knowledge of Russian.
Topic for 2025/26a: Russian Blockbusters. We study productions of enduring popular appeal that have become universally recognized cultural symbols in the Russian speaking world. We sample a variety of genres, including comedies, war films, spy and detective stories, musicals, and sci-fi films from the 1930s to our days. Dan Ungurianu.
Topic for 2025/26b: Russian, Soviet, and East European Popular Music / Rock and Roll Culture. This seminar explores the popular music culture in Russia, USSR, and Eastern Europe starting from the early 20th century through current trends. Particular emphasis is given to the development of the Soviet and East European rock scene in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s and to the ideological role of rock music during the Cold War. Prerequisite(s): RUSS 210 -RUSS 211 or the equivalent; or permission of the instructor.
Advanced seminar conducted in Russian.
Two 75-minute periods.
