GRST 341 - Topics in Latin Literature Semester Offered: Spring 1 unit(s) Topic for 2025/26b: The Roman comedian Terence was long considered a must-read on par with Cicero and Virgil for students of Latin, but has fallen out of favor over the course of the last century. In this course, we rediscover the joys of Terence’s Adelphoe, a classic tale of family drama, generational warfare, and clashing parenting styles. While gaining familiarity with Roman comedy’s origins and genre conventions, we examine Terence’s style, language, and humor in its ancient cultural context. At the end of the course, we also consider his complex reputation as both a comedian and a moral authority on slavery, race, and what it means to be human in contexts as disparate as ancient Rome and antebellum America. Rachel Morrison.
Prerequisite(s): GRST 245 or permission of the instructor.
Two 75-minute periods.
