ENGL 350 - Studies in Eighteenth-century British Literature Semester Offered: Spring 1 unit(s) Focuses on a broad literary topic, with special attention to works of the Restoration and eighteenth century. Robert DeMaria.
Topic for 2025/26b: From Classic to Romantic: the literary criticism of Samuel Johnson and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. A study of how literary criticism and aesthetic theory in general changed radically at the end of the eighteenth century. The two main texts are Johnson’s Lives of the Poets and Coleridge’s Biographia Literaria, but attention is also given to the writers most prominent in these two works: Shakespeare, Milton, Pope, and Wordsworth.
This course satisfies the pre-1800 requirement for the English major.
One 2-hour period.
