ENGL 206 - Intermediate Creative Writing Semester Offered: Fall and Spring 1 unit(s) Continued study and practice of various forms of prose and poetry. Reading and writing assignments may include prose fiction, journals, poetry, drama, and essays.
Topic for 2025/26b: Story Structure: Structure is the skeleton of storytelling. But how do you know which shape best fits your story? How do you find the beginning and end? What do you do with the middle? In this class, we investigate a variety of story structures and when to implement them. We read and examine work by Aimee Bender, Donald Barthelme, Ted Chiang, Samantha Hunt, George Saunders, Alexandra Chang, Marie-Helene Bertino, Lesley Nneka Arimah, Gabriela Garcia, and Kate Chopin. You generate short pieces from writing prompts and a longer piece which you revise for your final project. Student writing is workshopped as a class and in small groups throughout the semester. Christine Vines.
Prerequisite(s): Open to any student who has taken ENGL 205 .
