ESCI 385 - Remote Sensing and Analysis of Terrestrial Planetary Bodies

This class introduces students to the technology and datasets used by planetary scientists to study the surfaces of rocky bodies in our near solar system. Students use satellite, rover, and UAV images to analyze and interpret the geology of Earth, Mars, Venus and the moon. The final project for the class involves original research where students participate in collecting and analyzing remote sensing data with a drone. This project, along with weekly assignments, allows students to familiarize themselves with remote sensing tools such as Google Earth and ArcGIS as well as develop their creative scientific thinking and communication skills.

Prerequisite(s): Either ESCI 221  or ESCI 226  or ESCI 231  or permission of the instructor.

One 3-hour period.
