DRAM 336 - Seminar in Performance Studies

Semester Offered: Fall
1 unit(s)
Topic for 2025/26a: Applied Theater. Applied Theater knows no spatial bounds. It comes alive in settings around the world as unique as public squares and care homes. In Applied Theater work, practitioners and participants come together to create performances and workshops that focus on community building and social engagement. For this course, students study the theory, history, and practice of global performance through an Applied Theater lens. They engage with a wide range of practices including documentary theater, verbatim storytelling, reminiscence and memory projects, theater in education and for education, issue-based performance, dramatherapy, and Augusto Boal’s forum theater and legislative theater. Through the support of collaborative workshops, students develop individualized techniques that most speak to them as participants, facilitators, and artists. Joanna Gurin
