ART 382 - Belle Ribicoff Seminar Semester Offered: Spring 0.5 unit(s) Topic for 2025/26b: From Wonderland to Wild Things: Maurice Sendak and the Art of the Picture Book. This seminar focuses on how Maurice Sendak and his precursors William Blake, Randolph Caldecott, Wanda Hazel Gág, Dr. Seuss, and Beatrix Potter transform the picture book into one of the most profound and influential aesthetic expressions of the 20th century. Four of the six sessions take place at The Maurice Sendak Foundation in Ridgefield, Connecticut which maintains Sendak’s home and studio, as well as the original artwork for such landmark books as Where the Wild Things Are, The Nutshell Library and Outside Over There. The Foundation also owns Sendak’s superb collection of art of the romantic period, Disney memorabilia, and an extensive library covering the history of the picture book. With these resources the development of the children’s book is traced through the lens of Maurice Sendak’s practice as both as an artist and a connoisseur. Jonathan Weinberg.
