(Same as ENGL 380) Topic for 2015/16a: The Blues In/And Black Fiction. The blues makes audible the struggles and the resilience of African Americans. This seminar explores the relationship and influence of blues music on black literary, cultural, and critical production. We listen to sound recordings and watch videos, as we explore how black artists and scholars make use of blues aesthetics, themes, and even personas to craft their literary worlds and works. We think about the relationship between a musical form and texts, and we let questions of black vernacular tradition, gender, sexuality, urbanization, migration, violence, and love guide us.
