HIST 252 - Imagining India, 1707-1947Semester Offered: Fall 1 unit(s) (Same as ASIA 252 ) In 1707 India was ruled by the Mughal Empire. In the 18th and 19th centuries, multiple successor states fought for dominance, economies thrived, cultures diversified, and the future was full of possibilities-and uncertainty. With coverage encompassing but not defined by the subcontinent’s period as a British colony, we study the disintegration of the Mughal Empire and the resurgence of regional powers, the Rebels of 1857, the lives and experiences of “New Women” and Untouchables, and the traumatic Partition and Independence of 1947. Ms. Hughes.
