FILM 215 - Genre: Science FictionSemester Offered: Spring 1 unit(s) The course presents a survey of global science-fiction cinema from its beginnings in the silent period to the advent of digital technologies. Topics include subgenres (end of the world, time travel, space exploration, cyborgs), the relation of science-fiction films to their socio-political context and their function in popular culture. We contextualize these topics within discourses of postmodernism, postcolonialism, and feminism. Screenings may include: Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927, Germany), Robocop (Paul Verhoeven, 1987, USA), Enthiran (S. Shankar, 2010, India), Cyber Wars (Kuo Jian Hong, 2004, Singapore) and Nuoc 2030 (Nghiem-Minh Nguyen-Vo, 2014, Vietnam). Ms. Harvey.
Prerequisites: FILM 175 or FILM 210 and permission of the instructor.
Two 75-minute periods plus outside screenings.
