ART 251 - Modern America: Visual Culture from the Civil War to WWII

(Same as AMST 251) This course examines American visual culture as it developed in the years between the Civil War and World War II. Special attention is paid to the intersections among diverse media and to such issues as the emergence of new forms of mass imagery, consumerism, cosmopolitanism, regionalism, abstraction, gender, primitivism, mechanized reproduction, and the rise of modern art institutions. Artists studied include Winslow Homer, Timothy O’Sullivan, James McNeill Whistler, Thomas Eakins, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Mary Cassatt, Georgia O’Keeffe, Aaron Douglas, and Edward Hopper, among others. Ms. Baradel.

Prerequisite: ART 105-ART 106 or a 100-level American Studies course or permission of the instructor.

Two 75-minute periods.
