PHIL 240 - Philosophy of Art and Aesthetics

This course examines texts in the philosophy of art and aesthetics alongside various works of art in order to consider questions like: What is, or what ought to be, the relationship between art and politics? Is all art inherently “political”? What power does art have to perform political critique or allow us to imagine or even enact new political possibilities? What questions about political identity and memory are raised by art’s public function today in monuments and memorials? Readings may include: Plato, Friedrich Schiller, Karl Marx, Theodor Adorno, Guy Debord, Ewa Ziarek, Maggie Nelson, María del Rosario Acosta López, and others. Rachel Silverbloom.

Prerequisite(s): One 100-level Philosophy course or permission of the instructor.

Two 75-minute periods.
