JWST 301 - Senior Seminar Semester Offered: Spring 1 unit(s) (Same as ITAL 301 ) An examination of selected topics in recent Italian culture or of a single topic across several centuries. May be taken more than once for credit when topic changes. Required of all senior majors.
Topic for 2024/25b: Jewish Italian Literature. From the time of the Roman Empire to the present day, Italy has been home to a significant number of Jewish communities, small and large, each contributing to the diverse, multilingual cultural life of the peninsula. This class explores episodes in the rich tradition of Italian Jewish literature, from medieval poetry to Renaissance drama, from post-war memoirs to contemporary novels. Readings (both in translation and in the original) include: Immanuel Romano, Leone de’ Sommi, Sara Copio Sullam, Primo Levi, Giorgio Bassani, Liana Millu, Cesare Segre. Alberto Gelmi.
Prerequisite(s): ITAL 220 , ITAL 222 or ITAL 217 ITAL 218 with permission of the instructor.
Two 75-minute periods.
