DRAM 224 - Introduction to Performance Studies: What is(n’t) Performance

Semester Offered: Spring.
1 unit(s)
What do we mean when we refer to something as a “performance?” From traditional theatrical productions to social media, from every day interactions to political speeches to religious rituals to sporting events, performance is everywhere, permeating our interactions with the world in ways both familiar and surprising. How we understand performance, and ourselves as performers, can offer us a profound critical lens for understanding cultural and artistic production as well as social development and identity formation. In this course, students engage with the theoretical foundations of the discipline of Performance Studies as well as emerging trends in performance scholarship and artistic production. Amanda Culp.

Two 75-minute periods.

Course Format: CLS
