EDUC 390 - Teaching for Transformation: Curriculum and Pedagogy in Social Studies, Humanities, and the Arts

Semester Offered: Fall
1 unit(s)
This course is designed to engage prospective educators and youth workers in developing innovative, culturally relevant, and socially responsive curricula and classroom methods for teaching Social Studies, Humanities, and the Arts. We consider how to employ critical pedagogical and social justice oriented theories (including critical ethnic studies, libretory approaches, climate education, human rights education, etc…) in these disciplines, with a clear focus on effective and practical approaches to planning, implementing, managing, and assessing successful and transformative learning experiences for adolescent learners. We explore the relationship between these theories and approaches with related teaching techniques, highlighting equitable curriculum design, diverse teaching resources and texts, alternative modes of assessment, and student-centered classrooms that consider the intellectual, social, and emotional needs of adolescent learners.  Maria Hantzopoulos.

Prerequisite(s): EDUC 235  or EDUC 162 .

Two 75-minute periods.

Course Format: CLS
