AFRS 233 - Carceral Literature of the Caribbean

1 unit(s)
(Same as ENGL 233 )  This course examines how the narratives of non-imprisoned Caribbean writers who live in (neo)colonial conditions contest carceral entrapment. To perceive these dynamics, this class focuses less on ‘prison literature,’ which focuses exclusively on the prison experience, and more on ‘carceral literature,’ which is a broader exploration of the meanings of incarceration. In this vein, this course examines a range of literary works from drama to fiction and non-fiction prose narratives with the aim of better understanding how the meanings of incarceration shift and circulate within the wider Caribbean region. Such a re-orientation offers students a comprehensive framework to examine the punitive environments non-incarcerated people inhabit.  Michael Reyes Salas.

Two 75-minute periods.
